Have You Heard?

Lately I’ve been feeling overwhelmed. Everywhere I look, there’s a mess to clean. Every night I’m faced with 12 things that I could or should do after my kids go to bed. Every three minutes, I’m bombarded with, “Look, mommy!” or “Did you see me to do that?!”

And then there’s discipline, which is a daily learning curve. What we seemed to conquer yesterday is back for revenge today. And the whining! Don’t forget the whining! It’s enough to make a person crazy. Or yell really loud.

So, today when I opened my Bible app on my phone, I read the verse of the day with a couple tears:

Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength. (Isaiah 40:28, 29 ESV)

There are days that seem to beat us, when we reach the end of ourselves, and we can no longer give anything good to our children. There are days when every ounce of godliness has been tested, pushed, or whined out of us, and we revert to our human nature in full force. But when I read this verse today, I stood in awe of Who God is, and these days melt to nothing in comparison.

Haven’t you heard how big He is? How fully mighty? Don’t you know that He IS forever and ever and ever, and that no tantrum has ever gotten the best of His patience? Have you known the mercies and the grace He hands out joyfully, like a parent who willingly gives to a child who asks?

Have you heard that He never gets tired of us, and that no matter how many times we blow it, He doesn’t even feel weary in our growth? Do you know that when He gives us the consequences for our actions, that He does it because He loves us and wants us to be reconciled to Him, not because He just can’t stand that we did it again?

My friend, did you ever hear that He freely gives us power and strength to do what He’s called us to do? Even when we reach the ends of ourselves, He never reaches the end of Himself. When we can’t give anymore, God meets us with the fullness of His strength. When we don’t know what to do or how to discipline, God meets us with an understanding of our kids and our circumstances. When we feel overwhelmed, God meets us with steadfast character.

Be encouraged today. He has good things for you, and good things for your family. He is big enough for your circumstances. Even the whiny ones.

  1. Amen! He is more than enough, more than our circumstances. Our God is a Great God! I want to be like Him.
